REALLY. Hard. stuff.

I'm sitting by Reagan's crib, holding her hand as she falls asleep. It's nearly 10:00 pm, but she had a late nap. And she climbs out of her crib, so I'm opting for this solution tonight.

I hate pigs. I already did, but I do even more after tonight.

The county fair starts this weekend, and they needed to have a vet bill of health before they could enter the fairgrounds. (Christopher and Derek are raising 4-H hogs). So, they needed loaded into a trailer to go visit the vet for a few minutes.

I went out to take pictures. They'd already been trying for a while, and I'd fed the little kids and hid inside as long as I dared.

I didn't get a single picture and ended up jumping in to help.

These pigs are big. And stinky. And gross. AND dumb.

It took FOREVER to get them in- plus help from friends who already had their pigs in a trailer. (I kid you not, after two hours of squealing, fighting and snarling George literally walked up the ramp, into their trailer to join their pigs. 😠)

I was wearing sandals (my bad, I know- but remember, I was planning to take pictures!) I stepped in fresh poop. Then one of the pigs stepped on my toe.

Then I cried. My toe was fine, really. I cried because I hate hard work, stinky pigs, and doing things out of my comfort zone.

I am not one to persevere gracefully.

Thankfully, Brant knew I'd reached a limit and said I should go help Anna (who was standing naked on the back steps of the house- she'd had an accident and taken her swim suit off).

I happily went inside to help her, and turned on a cartoon for the little kids (we have cousins over). I texted back and forth with our save-the-day-friends, and then headed back out.

I survived it!

But, you know what impressed me even more? My boys! My husband. And my amazing sister-in-law. They were right there, fighting the whole time. They never gave up. They tried over and over and over again to succeed at their quest.

And I found myself proud to be in their company.

I heard Kayla say, "We're having a lesson in perseverance tonight" as she grabbed a board and blocked the charge of a raging mad pig 3 X's her weight. And we did.

Life is stinky. Life can be hard. And sometimes it hurts. It wears us down, knocks us over and makes us cry. But tonight, I learned that we can keep fighting.

Oh, how much I hated it. I really, really did.

I hope my boys will remember it though. And how they stuck it out. And how proud I am of them.

And the next time I eat bacon, I am REALLY going to enjoy it.

  1. Oh man! What a night!
No wonder you posted what you did on Insta!
We all have special talents and I think it takes special talent to notice when herding pigs into a trailer isn't someone else's talent and have the wisdom to let them step away. And it's another talent to keep trying and figuring it out in different ways.

    1. Yes, Brant is very talented at knowing when I've reached a breaking point. And I appreciate your perspective! I'm getting better at branching out, but I'm usually much more comfortable taking care of babies than doing "hard" work.

  3. Oh Girl! I totally get it! Grandpa has some advice for you.

Brings back so many memories of showing hogs and steers at the fair. Dad used to put a 5 gallon bucket over their head and back them up into the pickup. Sometimes we got down to the last one and all the others came crashing out. About 60 years ago Gordon was helping the neighbor load pigs and knocked out a front tooth after he ran into a protruding board He wore a fake one the rest of his life

    1. Yikes! I am very happy to say nobody lost a tooth! And oh that would be so frustrating to have them all escape again! 😠

    2. Not fun. I am sorry for the frustration of all. Personally I have thought about getting pigs and one of the things I found as I considered and researched was the idea if you even need to load pigs, because no matter the reason for pigs you normally need to load them to transport at some point... supposedly an "easy" way, is to take their food away the night before, then the next day back up the trailer and when it is all set, toss food in the trailer and watch them run for it and close the door fast :) Good luck to you all, in all your adventures

When you're the mom, on Mother's Day

Disclaimer: I do NOT have freckles. But I love them. So this Instagram filter is fun. Also, I was hiding from my demanding life for a minute.   Aw, Mother's Day. The holiday of so many emotions.  Joy. Pain. Relief. Sadness. Stress. Peace.  Maybe one of the most common feelings around Mother's Day is that of inadequacy .  We have these little humans (those of us who have been blessed with them), who offer gifts and sing our praises. And all of the talk of motherly love, sacrifice and awesomeness reminds us that maybe we're not all we're talked up to be.  Maybe it's all a mirage. We're putting on a show.  Maybe amidst their celebration of our hard work, we recognize just how crappy of a job we're really doing.  But, let's stop. And give ourselves a fair chance. After all, we did create these little humans (with help from Dad, obviously), and we carried them inside us while they grew strong enough to live on their own.  I mean, just ...

Finding yourself in motherhood

I'm writing a book.  This is one draft of one portion of one chapter.  I want your feedback.  Anybody who comments and tells me what they think can have a free, signed copy of the book once it's published. ;) ... .. . Years ago, when I was a new mom, I attended a class during a women’s night. The presenter talked about the importance of putting your shoes and socks on first thing when you wake up in the morning; and putting on make up and doing your hair. As I listened I remember taking note that I’d have to try better at that (all the while my subconscious was thinking, “Are you freaking kidding me? That’s never going to happen! I can barely drag myself out of bed to kiss my husband goodbye before he leaves for work, praying that the baby will keep sleeping!”) I will forever be grateful for my friend who sat next to me. She was a seasoned mother of six children, whom I admired and looked up to. She leaned over and whispered in my ear, “I never do that. It just matter...

Goal call!!

When I was young my mom gave me a ukulele for Christmas (or was it my birthday?) I loved it. It had a rainbow on it and said Hawaii (which was my dream vacation for so so so long!)  I finally made it to Hawaii this last summer, and my ukulele finally bit the dust after being abused by several children.  So I bought a new one when it was on sale on Amazon. It was fairly inexpensive and I took the risk. It's decent quality and certainly works well enough to fill some time during this Coronavirus quarantine.  I've enjoyed plucking at it and relearning a few chords in order to play a few songs.  I must've hit a new stage of this quarantine because last night I started thinking about some of my life goals and how I could (should) be using some of this time to get a little closer to them.  Don't get my wrong, I'm still pulling my hair out, crying every day, and barely surviving monitoring homeschool.  I read a blog written by a friend of mine who IS a...

For parents, during quarantine

I pulled myself together enough this morning to let my kids dye some Easter eggs.  Don't worry. This blog post isn't about ideas for activities or things to do with your kids during quarantine.  Nor is it about enjoying this time we have at home with our families (though I don't disagree with that sentiment).  This post is to tell you that you are not alone.  I saw something on Instagram a bit ago that talked about the storm. For some people, this whole thing is just a sprinkling. For others, it's more of a storm. And for others still, it's a freaking hurricane. The idea was that we can still enjoy our sprinkling, while not downplaying the devastating effects of the hurricane in other's lives.  At my house, it's a sprinkling. With a bit of thunder and lightening. And some wind.  I've mentioned before- that we're okay. We're safe at home, we have an income. We have food, toilet paper and the internet.  But, let m...

Revisiting my resolutions

Here we are. Rocking in the rocking chair. Reagan is feeling better, but still awfully snuggly.  I just enjoyed a delicious turkey sandwich with all the fixings. My favorite. In fact I eat it for lunch almost every day. It's best with kettle cooked jalapeno potato chips. Everything I used to make it is still on the kitchen counter. And there's a huge mess on my bedroom floor, the dining room floor and the kitchen table. Oliver and I spent all morning yesterday cleaning those areas. Story of my life, truly. I'll run around and clean it all up soon before the gang gets home.  You might wonder why I let it get that messy in the first place... Or maybe you already understand because you have kids of your own. Changing the subject- did you know I made a goal for this new year not to spend money until March? I mean specifically not to spend *extra* money- like on clothes, toys, etc.  I made it until almost February. I'm not upset with myself- it was a good way to ...
